Their eyes can be copper, blue, or odd-colored, with one blue and one copper eye of equal depth. I’ve never personally read The Three Musketeers, but when Thomas picked out the name and explained why he thought it worked, I had to immediately agree. When we met this Porthos, he was hissing at another cat who was trying to eat the kibble we’d left out for potential strays in our neighbourhood, and whenever we’d spot him from then on, he’d always have a sort of dishevelled look about his long hair. Porthos is a fictional character from The Three Musketeers – he’s honest, gullible, enjoys wine, and apparently really likes to eat. ![]() Picture from post The Story of The Three Musketeer Persian Cats (& an Imposter) Not only is it a lot easier to refer to a cat, or any animal really, with a name you’ve picked out than having to repeat “the black cat” then specify which black cat you meant – it’s also a lot more fun calling cats by names, and seeing if they ever respond to them! Nearly half a century before the Lolcats meme, Searle began drawing quirky, impossibly charming, exuberantly expressive cartoons and caricatures of cats, collected in Searle’s Cats ( public library) - the original cartoon canon of cats, published in 1967 and reprinted in 2005. But Searle’s sensitivity extended beyond his closest human, beyond humans in general, and into the animal world - he was an extraordinary cat aficionado, as evidenced by his contributions to the terrific Big New Yorker Book of Cats, and created the feline counterpart to Ralph Steadman’s delightful dog drawings. Ronald Searle was not only one of the greatest satirical cartoonists of the 20th century, but also a man of extraordinary sensitivity who, when his wife was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, made for her the most moving love letter imaginable, which helped her persevere.
